Operations MBA Careers

If you are already working in manufacturing or in operations, one way that might help you advance your career forward is to earn the Masters of Business Administration (MBA) in operations. But once you do, where can you expect to work? The operations MBA is traditionally split into two areas: service operations and manufacturing or production operations. Here are a few possibilities:

  • General Operations Managers. An operations manger is typically in charge of creating budgets, employee training and hiring, employee supervision, equipment procurement, and administrative policy development.
  • Operations Management Engineers. Operations managers develop plans and projections, improve manufacturing processes, oversee product development and re-design, monitor internal communications systems, and more.
  • Manufacturing Development and Operations. In this capacity, individuals manage the process of production planning, forecasting, quality control, standardization, and process analysis.
  • Service Operations. Similar to the position of operations manager, the individual working in service operations performs the same duties in a service capacity. Issues tackled are outsourcing, pricing optimization, customer service, and market optimization.
  • Consulting. Many operations MBA graduates enter the consulting field. Some have engineering backgrounds, making them ideal for assisting in process re-engineering, manufacturing consulting, and manufacturing optimization. A subspecialty in information systems can also be helpful.
  • Intermediate Management. You do not automatically leap into top management with the MBA, so you can expect to work as a product development manager, production supervisor or manufacturing director before moving on to upper level positions like plant manager or COO (chief operating officer).

As you can see, there are many fascinating career opportunities for the operations MBA. If you are currently working in manufacturing or engineering, the operations MBA is a tool that can contribute to further success in the field. Start your MBA now!
