You’ve got that undergraduate degree and you’ve taken a good, long look at the work force and have seen the light. It’s time to earn your MBA. But how to begin? We’re here to help. Below you’ll find the Who, Why, What, Where and How of earning your advanced business degree.
Who
You, of course, that’s who. What do you want out of an MBA? Do you have a career path in mind? Take some time to consider things. What educational environment do you excel in? Are you at your best attending lectures and engaging in discussion, or do you work best at home in front of the computer? Do you need to work while you are going to school? If so, how long can you take to earn your degree? Are you certain you will earn the return on your investment of an MBA education?
All of these are important factors to consider before moving forward. Earning an advanced business degree is a time-consuming—and expensive—commitment. Be sure that
Why
This is important: WHY do you want an MBA? Are you fulfilling a life-long dream, or simply following the expectations of your parents or friends? Are you hoping for a lucrative career and an advanced business degree is the next step down that path? Whatever your reason, if you are doing it for yourself and the dreams you hold for your life, you are more likely to succeed.
What
No we have to look at the nitty-gritty. MBA degrees do not come one-size-fits-all. You need to decide what specific area you want to focus on.
Do you love the basics of running a business? If so, an MBA in accounting might be for you. Prefer to manage the technology that powers today’s successful corporations? An MBA in Information Systems and a life as a Chief Information Officer might be just the ticket. Interested in how business manage to function? Perhaps Industrial and Organizational Dynamics is the MBA with your name on it. What about Marketing? Business ethics? Financial Management? Human Resources?
You can earn an advanced business degree in all of these fields and several others. Take the time to do some research and study your heart so that when you make that leap and begin earning your MBA, you will be on the path that will take you to your ultimate career goal.
The second “what” you have to consider is eligibility. Business school is very competitive, and you need a strong application to get in. Have you taken the GMAT (the Graduate Management Admission Test)? How about the GRE (Graduate Record Examination)? How are your scores?
Your application needs to be flawless. How is your personal essay? Have you had other people review it for you?
Take the time to make your business school admission application represent you the way you want to be represented. After all, you can’t get into business school without it.
Where
This question is just as important but much more practical. Do you want to stay close to home, or are you eager to explore other places? Does your MBA specialty have a preferred college or university, or can you attend anywhere? Do you want a place where you can live on campus, or would you rather live off-site?
The first step, of course, is to find out the best business school for your specialty. Then you can check out the best local options as well as visit other locations. What business school offers the courses you want at the times you want them? When visiting a business school, be sure to check out the surrounding neighborhoods and the services they offer. After all, if you are going to spend a lot of time in that area, you will need more than just what the college offers—after all, you’ll need to eat and shop!
Secondly, you should spend some time researching how the school assists its graduates. Does it provide good networking opportunities? Does it have a career center or a job placement office? How will your business school help you succeed in the workforce?
Once you have all this information, you will know which business school is right for you.
How
Ah, how may seem like the biggest question. How will I get in? How will I pay for my advanced business degree? How will I manage to work while going to school?
Luckily, in this day and age there are as many diverse options for earning your MBA as there are students. You can go to graduate school part-time and keep that good job. You can earn your MBA online both part-time and full-time, or perhaps for just some of your courses.
Financial aid is readily available to anyone who needs it, making an MBA a reality for everyone. The admissions counselors at the business school you choose can help you navigate the paperwork required and provide guidance on both financial aid and your course load. You may also find financial help at your place of employment.
To earn that advanced business degree, all it takes is you making the commitment and taking that first step. Good luck!
